Testing Bomshel for a Creative Portfolio Website

I was working on a redesign for a creative portfolio site when I came across Bomshel. It’s a romantic and sweet calligraphy typeface that immediately caught my eye. The characters dance along the baseline, giving it a unique visual rhythm that feels both elegant and expressive.

I decided to test it in the hero section of the homepage. The goal was to create a warm, inviting first impression. I placed a bold headline using Bomshel over a soft background image of a hand-drawn sketch. The result felt luxurious and personal, exactly what the designer wanted to convey about their creative process.

One thing I noticed right away was how Bomshel adds a sense of movement to static text. It’s not just a font; it’s a storytelling tool. When used for headings or titles, it creates a mood that feels more human and less corporate. That kind of personality can be a huge asset for a creative brand trying to stand out online.

As I tested Bomshel across different sections, I found it worked best for short phrases and headlines. For example, in the project showcase section, I used it for each title card. It gave the layout a cohesive, artistic feel without overwhelming the viewer. But I made sure to pair it with a clean sans serif font for body copy, which helped maintain readability and balance.

When considering readability, I checked how Bomshel performed on mobile screens. Since it’s a script font, it can be tricky to read at smaller sizes. To keep things legible, I used it only for larger headings and avoided it on buttons or navigation menus where quick scanning is essential. I also made sure there was enough contrast between the text and background, especially when placing it over images.

Another thing to consider when using Bomshel is its PUA encoding. This means it includes special characters and ligatures that can enhance the design further. I experimented with some of these alternate glyphs in a call-to-action section, adding a touch of flair to the “View My Work” button. It didn’t distract from the message but added a nice decorative element.

For the overall brand identity, Bomshel aligned well with the client’s vision. They wanted something that felt personal and professional, and this font struck that perfect balance. It wasn’t too playful or too formal—it had a timeless quality that could adapt to various design contexts.

I also thought about font pairing. Since Bomshel is a display font, it needed a complementary typeface for body text. I chose a modern sans serif like Montserrat for the main content. This combination created a strong visual hierarchy and ensured the design remained accessible and easy to read.

When testing the font in different layouts, I paid attention to how it interacted with other elements. For instance, using Bomshel in a sidebar menu didn’t work as well as I hoped. The script style clashed with the minimalist design of the rest of the page. I switched to a simpler font there, keeping Bomshel reserved for areas where it could shine most.

I also considered the technical aspects of using Bomshel. Checking the file formats, webfont availability, and licensing was important, especially since the project involved multiple pages and potential future expansions. The font supported multilingual characters, which was a bonus for a global audience.

In the end, Bomshel became a key part of the portfolio site’s design system. It helped define the brand’s voice and added a level of sophistication that elevated the entire experience. Whether it was used in headers, banners, or decorative accents, it always felt intentional and purposeful.

If you're looking for a font that brings warmth, elegance, and a touch of luxury to your digital projects, Bomshel might be worth exploring. It’s a great choice for creative portfolios, boutique websites, coaching platforms, or any brand that wants to express a more personal and artistic side through typography.
